On 2 September 2022, the Northern Beaches Council commenced the exhibition of its draft Conservation Zones Review. This is the first stage in Council’s process as it moves towards a single planning framework (Local Environment Plan/LEP) for the entire Northern Beaches LGA. The review broadly is seeking feedback on the proposed criteria and approach to be used by Council so to establish which land areas are included in conservation zones and what development is permitted in those areas.
The Palm Beach Protection Group welcomes the exhibition process but holds a number of concerns regarding the potential loss of conservation zones especially in the area of the former Pittwater LGA which includes Palm Beach.
Under the draft new conservation zoning framework more than 2000 properties will cease to be recognised as conservation (environmental) zones in the area of the former Pittwater LGA. It is of grave concern that this will open a floodgate to greater development at these properties and will lead to a significant loss of natural landscapes as permissible use and density controls are relaxed.
The Palm Beach Protection Group disputes the proposed conservation zoning framework as it is inconsistent with the environmental values of the area. It is our view that special consideration should be made to preserve the area’s character and qualities.
The Palm Beach Protection Group is encouraging people who care about our environment and the preservation of the local area to register your Non-Support by visiting Council’s comment page. In the comments section, please comment on the Conservation Zones Review indicating that you don’t agree with the approach and criteria applied. Submissions close 30 October 2022.
Additionally, a number of Northern Beaches representative bodies who have raised concerns regarding the proposed conservation zones have arranged a public forum for 4.00pm on Sunday 16 October 2022 at the Mona Vale Memorial Hall which we encourage you to attend.
The Palm Beach Protect Group remains committed to protecting our local area’s character and qualities for future generations.
